Songs About Women…

Happy International Women’s Day!

It’s difficult to explain to people sometimes why I work with different media.

But something struck me this morning as my peer group of women artists post pictures of their work on instagram for International Women’s Day. There are paintings and drawings of women, of themselves, their families…

I don’t think I’ve done much visual work since Nine Women that is obviously feminine in nature and presentation. Work about children has implications of motherhood of course, but not primarily.

But so much of my musical output is about women. So many of the songs… in fact I’d say most of them are about women, or about the world through the female lens.

So here is the answer. The subject chooses the media. Sometimes I do the choosing, but mostly I think it is instinctive. Like flicking between languages or channels.

I think maybe I should look into this phenomenon… but I’m a bit scared of breaking that instinctive thing. If I found out how it worked, would that make it possible for me to consciously choose, or would it make me doubt my choices?

So here are a couple of songs about women…
